Porsche Panamera Turbo

There were already many who strongly disliked the idea of the Cayenne model when it was lasered, so when the Panamera concept was presented, it was certainly not received with open arms by the most die-hard Porsche fans. But since the Cayenne generated more money for Porsche and enabled a fairly substantial increase on all levels, the Panamera was a given decision. And the reactions weren't much better when it was shown thanks to its rather different and somewhat clumsy appearance. So the odds weren't particularly good once the car rolled out of the factory and I can admit that when I saw it myself for the first time I was highly skeptical of the design

.

Now, however, it is the case that a completely new shape that you are faced with often needs a bit of getting used to, and that is exactly the case with the Panamera shape. The incredibly wide front and long body with its rather blunt end is certainly not well balanced at first glance. But then suddenly the pieces fall into place and you begin to make friends with the shapes. A certain part of the friendship starting to grow can be due to the fact that you get a different perspective once you get into the Panamera. The interior is well built like few others and invites you to take long trips in an active way.

The detail work is of the highest class in classic Porsche fashion. However, the middle console has a very strong resemblance to Nokia's luxury mobile brand Vertu and, in my opinion, is not the prettiest on the market. But as I said, you may need to get used to this one as well. The Panamera is strictly a four-seater, and the seats could be more like four really comfortable armchairs. The instrumentation is really user-friendly and a car screen has been incorporated into one of the dashboards where you can get all the information about the car but also a navigation map, very convenient so you don't have to take your eyes too far from the road.

The Panamera is now released in a range of engine options, but we have chosen to test the flagship with a Turbocharged V8 of 4.2 liters that delivers 500 horses. There is a lovely rumble about the engine but not at all loud so it disturbs the cabin. For this, Porsche has chosen its PDK box, Porsche Doppelkupplung, a super-fast double-clutch box that reacts faster than lightning. This also means that the acceleration is very smooth and soft.

In order to find out properly how the Panamera Turbo feels, I have chosen to go up and visit a friend in Idre. The journey there is in the worst conditions with sleet, large patches of ice with road grooves in the road. Despite its 20 inch tires, the ride is incredibly safe and I arrive without the slightest hint of fatigue. It is only when I am about to return home that I have better luck with the weather and I can let the Panamera stretch out a bit and the speed resources exceed the speed laws by a lot to say the least.

Despite its size, the Panamera still feels very easy to handle, the steering is so direct and you feel every single thing that happens through the steering wheel. However, this does not surprise me considering that it is a Porsche after all. When I arrive at my home, it's with a feeling that the journey has gone by too fast and that I wouldn't have minded if there were another 30 miles to drive. I could probably name the Porsche Panamera Turbo the world's best long-distance car.
