Tesla Model S Performance
With the new model Model S, Tesla seriously shows that the next generation of cars can be 100% electric without being boring or contributing to range anxiety.Â
Tesla was started in 2003 by the founder of the online payment service PayPal, Elon Musk. Since 2013, the California-based company has been profitable and is now valued at $20 billion and listed on the Nasdaq 100 stock exchange. Other shareholders in the company include Daimler, Toyota and Panasonic. The latter is Tesla's battery partner. Globally, the company now has more than 5,500 employees and is expanding all the time.
Esben Pedersen, who is communications manager in Scandinavia, says that the temporary stand in Täby Centrum will now be converted into a real store in the shopping centre. It will be the first real Tesla store in Scandinavia and will imitate those found in the United States.
A large service facility towards Arlanda is also to be built.
The construction of fast charging stations should be ready already this summer, so you can go from Åre via Stockholm on to Gothenburg and finally Malmö, says Esben. From Åre and Malmö, the network is further anchored both to Norway and down into Europe.
When asked how sales are going in Sweden, Esben replies that they chose not to comment on individual markets. If you look globally, however, the target for 2014 is to increase by 56 % compared to 2013, which lands at 40,000 cars compared to around 23,000 for 2013.
The Tesla Model S is the company's second model and the first to be mass-produced. The first was a strict two-seater roadster based on a Lotus. The shape is signed by the car designer Franz von Holzhausen as the previous work with Mazda and GM. The Model S is a four-seat, five-door GT model with plenty of luggage space, both front and rear thanks to the absence of a conventional engine. If you want, you can get two chairs in the rear luggage compartment for a sum of just over SEK 13,000 that two children can sit in. If you look at other cars that compete with the Tesla Model S in terms of models, it is the Audi A7, Mercedes CLS and BMW 6- Series Gran Coupé.
When you approach the car and have the key with you, the handles come out of the door in a very elegant way. To open the doors, just grab the handle and they will open, so you don't have to pull the door for it to open. In place in the driver's seat, you don't have to do anything at all to start the car. It is already running through a sensor inside the seat. A very logical solution that surprisingly hasn't been invented before. It is precisely this kind of ingenuity that makes the Tesla Model S so different from other car brands. In a way, it feels like Tesla has reinvented the wheel, but this time much better and smarter than previous inventors. In place in the somewhat unimaginative chair, which is perhaps one of the few design details that is not so appealing, it is enough to turn the steering wheel gear to drive. The car glides silently from standstill, a very strange feeling if you have never driven an electric car before. The noiseless journey ends on a country road and finally the coast is ready to test the acceleration. The gas pedal is pushed to the bottom and then everything happens at once, immediately and completely sleeplessly like nothing else comparable. The power is so incredibly strong from the same millisecond that the gas pedal is depressed. You can't even compare this to a Koenigsegg with its 1000 plus horsepower. In a car equipped with a really powerful internal combustion engine and turbo, first the power has to travel through the engine, turbo, gearbox etc to finally get to the tires. The power curve slopes upwards and the power only comes after a short second. In a Tesla, you have to turn upside down on that curve. Here, all the power comes straight away without any delay whatsoever. However, it drops faster than in a car with a normal engine. However, the feeling is huge, completely new for a person who is used to cars with internal combustion engines.
To control the car's systems, there is a 17-inch touchscreen in the center console. From this you control all the car's systems such as navigation, driving comfort programs, AC, stereo and the car's panoramic roof to name a few. You can also surf and the car's reversing camera that appears on the screen is in HD quality. Since the Tesla Model S lacks the gimbal, there is therefore no gimbal tunnel that goes straight through the passenger compartment. Therefore, the floor is completely flat between the seats, something that feels and looks a little strange before you get used to it. The advantage, however, is the generous space this contributes to. The cabin is otherwise very tastefully designed with clean surfaces and different material choices. The test car, which is a Performance, has many panels in carbon fiber that give it a sporty look.
The incredible thing Tesla has succeeded in is making a series-produced electric car that for the first time has a normal range. The Tesla Model S with the 85kWh battery can, under the right conditions, get about 50 miles on a single charge. That is around 30 miles more than other electric cars on the market. Along with the big investments in Europe, the goal is to be able to drive from Narvik in the north to Lisbon in the south completely free of charge by charging the car at Tesla's own fast charging stations, which are being fully built at the time of writing. A Tesla Model S 85 kWh Performance. costs SEK 837,000 in purchase. This price includes the so-called super environmental car premium. The car is also tax-exempt for five years. If you pay for the electricity yourself, the cost per mile is around SEK 2 per mile.
Model S Performance shows in the absolute best way that the cars of the future can be electric. Of course, you may miss the wonderful sound of a chubby V8 engine, but when you sensibly compare the pros and cons, the Tesla Model S Performance wins by horse lengths. This is the future and now it's here!
