Peugeot 5008
The Peugeot 3008 was chosen as the car of the year 2017. Now the 5008 is here with a higher number, an extra row of seats and the addition of SUV.
Thanks to its looks, spaciousness and engine range, the 3008 managed to claim the 2017 European Car of the Year award ahead of the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Now the new 5008 is here and Gate Motor has taken a look at what this model has to offer. We are in Lisbon, Portugal to test drive the new model from the French manufacturer. The first thing that strikes you when you look at the car is its elongated shape from its sibling. Now the car is long but at the same time slim, 19 centimeters longer than the 3008 to be exact and the total length is 464 centimeters. Also, the 5008 has gone from being an MPV to an SUV. A line follows all the way from the headlights to the front and transitions into a chrome strip at the bottom of the windows to end in a fold upwards on the rear post which then frames the windows. Stylish and sober, and that's how the overall experience is also felt on the 5008. When you sit in the car, this experience becomes even more clear. Here, Peugeot has succeeded really well and the feeling of an airplane cockpit is palpable and it may not be a coincidence because they call the interior the i-Cockpit. However, this name has mainly to do with the instrumentation for the driver. Instead of conventional gauges, there is now a large screen in front of the leather-covered steering wheel where all the information is displayed. The shape of the steering wheel is not completely round, but rather sportily chamfered at the top and bottom. A large 8-inch touchscreen with the navigation and infotainment system is also located in the middle of the upper edge of the dashboard. Below the screen are a number of piano-like buttons that control the basic functions. In the GT version, you get most of that extra, such as 19 inch aluminum rims, 3D navigation, Rear camera, Alcantara upholstery, keyless assist and more. In the 3D navigation system, you have voice control, among other things, and if you prefer to use the apps you have on your smart phone, this is done easily with a so-called mirror screen. Above you, the sun shines in through the large panoramic glass roof. The environment in the Peugeot 5008 SUV is really good and the feeling of claustrophobia is as far away as it can get.
The engine option we chose to test drive was the strongest gasoline engine with 165 horses and automatic transmission. A combination that works smoothly and nicely together without feeling sleepy. On the Portuguese roads you slide along and the 5008 feels really pleasant to drive. There are a number of assistance systems to help, such as adaptive cruise control with automatic braking, distance warning, lane keeping assistance, fatigue warning, automatic high beam, speed sensor, blind spot warning and 360-degree all-round vision with cameras and parking assistance. In other words, you can feel safe behind the wheel.
The whole of the new Peugeot 5008 SUV is really good. A spacious and bright interior combined with good driving characteristics both in terms of ride and safety. Add to that a modern system for navigation and infotainment and the 5008 SUV is guaranteed to end up with many satisfied customers.
