The grounds on and around the Vallelunga racetrack outside Rome had to show their colours one day in April against a new bull from San'Agata Bolognese. Enliven was there and witnessed this day.

The luxury car brands that today do not have an SUV in their model range are easy to count. However, there are still a couple, including Ferrari, who have not let their brand adorn this type of car yet. Lamborghini, on the other hand, was among the first to have one when they let the Cheetah military vehicle become civilian with the model designation LM002 and thus the first super SUV. The engine in the LM002 was the same as the iconic Countach, a smooth-sounding V12 engine of 5.7 litres.

When actor Sylvester Stallone bought an LM002, it was aptly nicknamed Rambo-Lambo

The name Urus comes from Aurochs which was a form of wild cattle that existed in Europe and Asia for millions of years. The last one died in Poland in 1667 and in Swedish the name is uroxe. An Urus of the time could weigh as much as up to 1500 kg.

The shapes and design of the Urus stand out from the crowd when we compare it to other SUV models. It is angular and sharp lines all over the body. Of course, it is no coincidence that the Urus looks like this. The whole thing is a direct connection to other Lamborghini models and what we like to talk about, the brand's DNA.

The man behind the Uru's appearance is called Mitja Borkert and previously worked at Porsche and was responsible for models such as the Panamera Sport Turismo, Macan and Mission e to name a few. In addition to his work as chief designer at Lamborghini Centro Stile and Urus, Mr Borkert was also involved in developing the shape of the Terzo Millennio concept.

Time has passed and a lot of water has flown under the bridges since LM002. To be precise, we are talking about 32 years. The brand from San't Agata Bolognese has since received German rule which was probably the saving grace for survival.

The first model after Audi became the main owner that became a success was the Gallardo. There are still the brutal V12 cars, but when they now launch their new SUV Urus, it was an engine with eight cylinders instead of twelve as with the LM002. The newly developed V8 does not need to be ashamed of itself, with twin turbo units it generates 650 horsepower. Enough to send this 2.2 tonne bull from a standstill to a hundred in just 3.6 seconds.

Top speed is reached when the meter shows 304 kilometres per hour, a breathtaking speed that makes the Urus the world's fastest SUV

From an environmental perspective, powertrains with hybrid solutions are said to lie in the future. Electrification is also on the way at Lamborghini, which was shown in the Terzo Millennio concept, which was developed together with the MIT school in the USA.

To show the dynamic nature of the Urus, the test drive is set at the historic Autodromo Vallelunga Piero Taruffi racetrack (founded in 1959) outside Rome. On the track, the Urus really shows what the brand has achieved, the hashtag slogan for the Urus project reads "Since we made it possible". Thanks to its power and four-wheel steering, which the sibling Aventador S also has, the Urus hugs the must out of every single curve.

On the track, it is advantageous to choose the Corsa driving programme, one of six options available on a control called Anima. In addition to the Corsa programme, we also find Strada, Sport, Sabbia, Terra and Neve. The switch these are on can be found in the middle of the centre console where you would normally find a gear lever. Here now sits a larger cluster of levers called Tamburo in Lamborghini language.

Anima is on the left side of the Tamburon, on the right there is a control Lamborghini appropriately named Ego. With Ego, you choose for yourself how the character of the car should be. You can choose how the driveline, steering and chassis should behave if you don't think the pre-programmed settings found in the Anima programmes suit you.

That the Urus is fast on the track was not too difficult to figure out. But when the test drive continues off the track and on something that would be more called a rallycross track, it starts to be difficult for the brain to keep up. Stones, dirt and dust and a car for close to two million kroner feels like a very bad combination, especially if it also has to go fast and preferably wide.

After a couple of laps on the off-road track, one can only conclude that the Italians have done a good job, the car is still together and it has also gone fast without any problems whatsoever. How many owners will actually treat their Urus this way remains to be seen, but with the Urus, Lamborghini really shows where it's been and where the cabinet should stand, not in a corner but proudly in the middle of the bullring with the dust swirling around.
