Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance
Driving a plug-in hybrid is nothing new! I do it myself with my Jeep Wrangler 4xe. But in comparison to the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance, my Jeep stands still when you press the gas at the bottom of the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance!
I have driven the AMG GT model before and you can read that article here. The AMG GT is a 4-door version of the GT coupe model, which you can read about here. The four-door version is of course larger, but they have still managed to maintain the sportiness. Frameless doors and a consistently very sporty attitude! What is new about the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance is that, in addition to its petrol-powered V8 engine of 639 horses, it has an additional 204 horses that come from an electric motor. So in total, the effect is a staggering 843 horsepower! As some of you probably know, I have driven a lot of performance cars and also quite a few super sports cars. But 843 horses is a lot whatever car men compare it to. Of course there are super sports cars with more power, but a four-door sedan with plenty of room for four people is certainly not the norm!
When I pick up the car at Mercedes in Akalla, where you pick up the press cars, the journey quickly goes out onto the motorway. Without risking the driver's license, which would be easy in this car, I still accelerate a little on the freeway entrance. The reaction is so immediate and powerful that I can hardly remember when I felt anything like it, if I even did? The combination with a powerful petrol V8 engine and the electric horses is really something completely different. I have, as some of you may have read, tested the Mercedes AMG EQE 53. And there I wrote how insane the acceleration from 0 was but that it slowed down when the car picked up speed. With the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance, it really is the best possible of two power sources. The electric motor, which gives maximum acceleration from a standstill and then when the car has gained speed and the petrol engine has reached revs where the power is available, continues where the electric motor cannot provide more power. This combination is truly breathtaking in every way.
I must be a little late on this particular AMG model because you may have seen and read here that I tested the Mercedes AMG EQE 53 before the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance. For the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance was actually the first electrified AMG model to be unveiled.
In addition to being a missile on four wheels with room for four people, it is also a very comfortable one. Of course, everything you want is there and in abundance because it's an AMG model. Incredibly comfortable seats. A large horizontal screen that contains all the information the driver needs to see clearly. As many as 25 speakers and a sound system from Burmester also make your favorite music sound out of the ordinary. But quite honestly, even the V8 engine offers a lovely soundtrack.
To say that the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance is a family car would be really wrong. But compared to the GT model with two doors, you actually get a lot of room in the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance and the luggage compartment in the back swallows a lot. Perhaps not as much as the sibling G63 that I recently tested or the family car E-Class station wagon that is also available as an AMG model. But enough to take four people on a weekend trip or bring the golf clubs to the golf course.
So the experience of the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance is really out of the ordinary even for me as a relatively experienced driver of just these car models. Because 843 electric and petrol horses working together provide a proper speed experience far above what is permitted on our Swedish motorways. So clearly, the Mercedes AMG GT63 SE Performance is a car to be experienced in its home country of Germany and on the autobahn! There, all the electric and petrol horses would have an outlet for all their power.
