Mercedes AMG EQE 53
I have driven many AMG cars but it has been a long time since I experienced something like this that I got to experience in the AMG EQE 53!
At first glance, the AMG EQE 53 doesn't look like much to the world. Especially not now when almost the entire Taxi Stockholm fleet consists of Mercedes EQEs. But immediately when you get closer to the AMG EQE 53, you understand that this is no taxi. But exteriorly, there is still not much that reveals what it is really about for Mercedes. However, there are some AMG emblems here and there and really big and stylish rims. It is only when you get into the AMG EQE 53 that you see that this is an AMG and not a Taxi Stockholm. Among other things, it says AMG on the lower edge of the steering wheel. The steering wheel is also covered in alcantara, and if you want to go all the way, which of course you do, you can order the steering wheel in carbon fiber. There are also AMG emblems in the backrests of the seats. Now, I haven't driven a regular EQE, but I have sat in a Taxi Stockholm and can't remember it looking this nice and sporty. The EQE 53 AMG simply has the right attitude.Â
When you press the start button and start the Mercedes AMG EQE 53, not much happens, it's an electric car so everything is quiet and peaceful, so far... I had taken the car to my friend Richard Göransson's racing track GällerÃ¥sen, which is located in Karlskoga. The trip there was partly in the evening and it was a little rainy so very calm. So my experience was relatively uneventful when I rolled out onto the racing track from the pits. I had had the pleasure of driving myself on the track so I was all alone when I drove out. So the gas was planted in a depressed position. And my goodness, as I said, I've driven almost every AMG car and even test drove Formula 1 twice and this was actually something completely different. The acceleration out of the pit and onto the track was so brutal that I actually let off the gas pedal a little because the roller coaster effect was too powerful, and for me as a driver. This has actually never happened to me before. The thing is that I don't like riding roller coasters precisely because I feel that I lack control. You do that as a driver in the Mercedes AMG EQE 53 and then the natural reaction is to let off the gas pedal.Â
When the starting straight turned into the first turn that goes to the right, it felt like a relief to have to brake. And the brakes are increased on the AMG EQE 53, as they usually are on all AMG cars. You know that you need good brakes to stop a car with as much power as the AMG cars have. The roller-coaster effect changed to a controlled feeling of changing the speed so that the curve can be taken without strangeness. But of course I will willingly admit that I had to brake properly and hard because I gained more speed than I would have with a petrol car. A big difference is also that you are affected by the engine sound and act based on what you hear, which is completely missing in the EQE 53 AMG. You can certainly turn on an artificial sound, but it doesn't feel like it can be compared to a real V8 that had been sitting in it otherwise. But I was a bit unprepared for the curve coming and the lack of my acoustic reference and braked more and harder than normal. So the curve could be taken in a controlled manner without difficulty.
The lap was very fast but controlled. Thanks to the acceleration at low speeds, the AMG EQE 53 does hard work superbly. It was only when I was about to take the entire start and finish line that I experienced what you can experience with electric cars that differentiates them from petrol cars. Enough that a car car is blazing fast and has a huge acceleration from standstill but here it stops and the petrol car takes over. In the petrol car, it's all about building up torque, once the power has been built up and the engine starts to work at full capacity, it will happen and then it really happens. And the combination of the sound of an engine working at full power is something special. I understand that this is a generational issue that will disappear when those who grow up now and are used to electric cars will have a rather negative attitude to experiences like this and instead feel that it is more disturbing than amusing. But for now, fossil fuel cars are still being produced and then you can still be amused by them with a clear conscience.Â
But back to the AMG EQE 53! The AMG EQE 53 is equipped with 625 electrified horses. 0-100 is completed in a breathtaking 3.5 seconds. The top speed is locked at 240 km/h. If the battery is fully charged and you don't drive like a car thief or on a track like I did, you should get 526 kilometers, according to the WLTP test. By the time I got to the track the battery was fully charged and it only took a few laps it had gone down significantly more than if I had been driving on the road. And if you only use the car for everyday use, this is an incredibly comfortable car. Driving and driving the AMG EQE 53 is incredibly comfortable. As a front passenger, you have your own screen that is part of the large screen called "hyperscreen". Most of the functions that a passenger can benefit from can be controlled here. On the lower half of the steering wheel, at 22 minutes past and 22 minutes in, there are two controls where you can set a number of functions such as the artificial engine sound, the dampers, anti-skid and an AMG mode. On the control located to the right of the center on the underside of the steering wheel, you can set the driving program, Slippery", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+" and "Individual are available to choose from.Â
As I wrote before, I miss the sound of a V8 engine at full power, but with time and generational changes it will surely disappear. So the Mercedes AMG EQE 53 is clearly the route I would choose to go if I were forced to switch from fossil cars today. Then I can feel that driving will continue to be fun.Â
