Mercedes AMG G63 AMG
The Mercedes G-Class is a classic, there is no doubt about that! As an AMG version and giving the square SUV more luxury and power than necessary is illogical but absolutely perfect!
The Geländewagen that the G stands for in the G-Class began to be built as early as 1979 in collaboration with the Austrian Steyr-Daimler-Puch. When the model first began to be built, it went by the name Puch G. Since then, it has come in numerous models and versions. Because the G-Class has such good off-road characteristics, it has been a highly valued car within the defense industry and several countries have it, including Sweden. In Sweden, it goes by the name Terrängbil 14/15.
My own familiarity with the G-Class goes back a long way. I have several friends who had the model and were incredibly happy with it. Of course it's like driving around a barn wall and it uses a lot more gas than most other cars, but the model gives the driver a sense of security that is probably hard to find in any other car model.
When the G-Class got an update in 2018, they really managed to keep what was most charming about the model but improve what was perhaps a little out of date about it. If you know the model from before, you can immediately see if it is an updated G-class or not. But they have still managed to keep the appearance in a perfect way so an untrained eye would probably take the versions as the same model.
In 1993, an AMG version of the G-Class was presented. Then it was based on a G 500 with a V8 engine bored out from 5 to 6 liters and which delivered 326 horses. Only 30 cars were built with one of them having the short wheelbase. As I said, there have been a lot of variants on the G-Class but also on the AMG version where there were versions with V6 engines, the AMG G 36. An AMG version with a turbocharged V12 engine was also produced which had a whopping 603 horsepower. Then the monstrous version AMG G 63 6×6 with 6 wheels! Unfortunately, I have never experienced an AMG G 63 6×6, but one day it will happen and then probably in Dubai where it performed best.
But I had the pleasure of spending a week with the latest version of the AMG G 63 in Sweden. I obviously wanted to put some miles on the car, so it was a trip down to Gothenburg from Stockholm. No long journey, but enough to feel the car's lovely personality and see the money disappear from the bank account when you had to refuel. Because this is frankly a real alcohol list when it comes to the consumption of petrol, and that's what really drags down the overall impression of this charming square on four wheels. So no car for those who want to think economically and the environment. There are rumors of an electric version, EQG, but it has not been presented yet.
Another thing that unfortunately detracts from the overall impression of this charming car is that it has become very popular among the more dubious target group who do not manage their lifestyle and business completely legally. But that will probably always be the case with special and exclusive cars that are fast and can carry heavy loads.
Although the turbocharged V8 engine sings beautifully, Mercedes has been kind enough to install a Burmester audio system that provides an exquisite audio experience on what you love to listen to. But as mentioned above, the V8 engine really gives shivers of pleasure when you press down on the gas pedal a little extra.
Those of you who are aware of me and what I have done may know that I drove several pickup trucks that I used in my work as a car photographer. It has always been a great advantage to be able to take photos of other cars at speed from the flatbed instead of your open tailgate. But then I opened my eyes to the Jeep Wrangler. A five-seater Jeep that you can easily convert into a convertible and safely work from. The dream had of course been a G-Class, but the G-Class as a cabriolet has only partially released the short version, which unfortunately has aged and feels too outdated for my taste. Then the monster version Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet which was equipped with a V12 engine of 630 horsepower and a nice price tag of around €500,000, so a little over my budget unfortunately. But should they get around to making a cabriolet version of a new G-Class, I will be weak and want one, and preferably as an AMG version but the lovely V8 engine but more logically maybe the electric version that is expected to come in the future.
When I was returning the press G 63 which was metallic brown with wood paneling in the interior. Then at the Mercedes press car park out in Akalla there was a solid gray AMG G 63. I asked David who is in charge of the Mercedes press cars what it was for and then David told me that it was the person who worked before him who had ordered it but that it never ran as a press car. I took a closer look at it as it is really my favorite color and to my delight it had carbon fiber interior. I asked David if I could take the gray G 63 AMG out to take some pictures and publish in this article and write, if I had my choice.
