Lamborghini House and Revuelto SV<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the absolute highlights during my time in Monterey was the visit to Lamborghini House. Here I was given the opportunity to take a closer look at the new Lamborghini Revuelto SV and, above all, talk to two people who could provide completely different perspectives on the car: head of design Mitja Borkert and Alessandro Farmeschi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have already had the opportunity to drive the Revuelto and wrote afterwards the 2024 test drive<\/a> that Lamborghini had succeeded in something that beforehand felt far from certain. Despite the electrification, the naturally aspirated V12 had kept its character and the car still felt very much like a Lamborghini.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was why I was extra curious about what happens when Lamborghini takes the same foundation and applies the two letters that throughout history have stood for some of the brand's most extreme models: SV, Super Veloce<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitja Borkert and Lamborghini's design DNA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This was not the first time I met Mitja Borkert<\/a>. We met back in 2018 when Lamborghini invited us to the international launch of Urus<\/a> at Vallelunga outside Rome. Mitja had then been design director at Lamborghini for a couple of years and Urus was the first Lamborghini project he worked on after leaving Porsche<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the presentation, I had the opportunity to photograph him while he was sitting and sketching. It became a portrait that I still like very much. I also photographed the sketch itself, and eight years later the pictures feel especially appropriate to bring out again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, the Lamborghini Revuelto SV was the centre of attention. I started by asking Mitja how he views Lamborghini\u2019s design DNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> When designing a new Lamborghini, it should be immediately obvious that it is a Lamborghini, even without the badge. How difficult is it to respect the brand's history without getting stuck in the past?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitja Borkert:<\/strong> During my ten years at Lamborghini, we have worked a lot on defining what Lamborghini's design DNA actually is. When I got here, there wasn't really any clear definition of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me it began with the silhouette, which comes above all from the Countach. Then we have the Y-shape and the hexagon, elements that we have developed into clear signatures both externally and internally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet we avoid getting stuck in history by always looking ahead. People ask if we will make the Miura or Espada again, but the answer is no. Lamborghini must be a brand that looks forward. We want to create extraordinary design. I usually say that we give adrenaline a shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> When performance and aerodynamics dictate the car's shape, how much freedom do you still have as a designer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitja Borkert:<\/strong> A lot. I see the engineers as partners, not as people I'm going to fight against. Aerodynamics is incredibly important in a hypercar, so we have a constant dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the aerodynamicists come up with a solution I would never have thought of myself, and that in turn can create something very interesting in the design. But if something becomes too big or ruins the proportions, it is naturally my job to say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> Is there any detail on the Lamborghini Revuelto SV that you particularly like yourself, but that most people might not notice straight away?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitja Borkert:<\/strong> Yes. Stand directly behind the car and look over the exhaust system and the engine, through the rear window and into the cabin. I love that angle. It almost looks like a fighter jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then there is a small Easter egg in the interior. The Y-shape in the centre console and the air vent together almost create a face. Looking through the window, it almost looks like an alien is sitting in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> Lamborghini has created some of the world's most recognisable cars, like the Miura and Countach. Is it harder to create an icon today?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitja Borkert:<\/strong> You cannot create an icon. A car becomes an icon over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can make the best design you can, but then the car has to become part of society and build its own history. The Countach didn't become an icon the day it was unveiled. It became one over the years, through the posters and everything that happened around the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Becoming an icon takes time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> I ought to know this, but I'm asking anyway. Which was the first Lamborghini you designed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitja Borkert:<\/strong> I came from Porsche, where my final project was the Mission E, which later became the Taycan. When I arrived at Lamborghini in 2016, I went straight into the Urus project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The basic shape was already there, so my task was above all to complete and develop the design. My first really big statement together with the team therefore became the Terzo Millennio. Among other things, we established the Y-shapes there and many of the ideas that have since followed through to our later cars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back to Urus and Vallelunga<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The fact that Mitja himself brought up Urus naturally made me think back to our first meeting in 2018. During that same trip, I was there to drive the Urus for a feature in Swedish Robb Report<\/a> and at the same time photograph the car for American Robb Report<\/a>, where I shared a car with Viju Mathew<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drive took us both out onto the roads around Rome and to Vallelunga, where we had the opportunity to experience the Urus on track. For me, the assignment therefore involved both driving Lamborghini's then brand-new super sports SUV and photographing it for two different editions of Robb Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pictures of Mitja with a pen in his hand feel almost even more relevant today than when I took them in 2018. For despite all the digital tools, his work still begins in a very traditional way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> When you start designing a Lamborghini, do you still start with pen and paper?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mitja Borkert:<\/strong> My first idea might actually come in the shower in the morning. There is always a spark somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the first way to make the idea visible is still a sketch. Then we naturally use digital tools, models, and now even AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the process is roughly: shower, sketch, tape, digital and AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Alessandro Farmeschi, the conversation instead focused on the technology and above all on how Lamborghini has managed to push the boundaries even further with a car that, even in standard specification, is at an extremely high level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having driven the Revuelto myself, I had a clear point of reference ahead of the Lamborghini Revuelto SV. My first question therefore became quite obvious. What will I actually notice first when one day I get to sit behind the wheel of the SV?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> I drove the standard Revuelto 2024<\/a> and was impressed by how Lamborghini managed to retain the character of the naturally aspirated V12 despite the hybrid technology. What will be the biggest difference when I drive the Revuelto SV?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> Above all, the precision and sharpness. On the track, the car almost feels as if it is running on rails. I have driven it at Nard\u00f2 and the fantastic thing is how easy it is to reach a very high level of performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You never feel the car is on the limit. It always has more to give. That is due, among other things, to the suspension, the tyres, the extra electric power and the torque vectoring system. I simply didn't want to stop driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> So if the standard Revuelto was already a very sharp scalpel, have you simply made it even sharper?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> Yes, absolutely. One sometimes forgets the extremely high level the Revuelto is already at. With the SV, we've pushed the boundary even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> What was the biggest technical challenge with the Lamborghini Revuelto SV?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> Improving a car that is already at a very high level. We increased the power and developed the high-voltage battery to get better performance and endurance on the track. That meant extra weight, which we then needed to compensate for in other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, we worked on suspension, brakes and aerodynamics. The challenge was to get all the parts to work together and find the right balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Revuelto<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> How did you manage to increase performance without sacrificing the ability to use the car on ordinary roads?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> An SV is naturally more track-oriented, but the comfort should still be there. With the right suspension setup, you can use and enjoy the car on public roads as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is about finding a balance where the car is significantly sharper on track without you feeling after an hour on country roads that you do not want to drive any more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> Which change are you personally most proud of?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> The design and aerodynamics, above all the wing. It's powerful and sporty yet at the same time elegant. To me, it's almost a work of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it obviously has to work aerodynamically too. You need the right amount of downforce without creating too much drag. The combination of design and function is what I like the most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Revuelto<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> The naturally aspirated V12 is a huge part of <\/strong>The Revuelto SV and Lamborghini's identity. How do you see its future as emission standards become increasingly stringent? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> The V12 is part of our history and as long as we are able, we will continue with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cannot, of course, foresee future legislation, but the V12 remains in our plans and Lamborghini is very committed to keeping it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"The<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> If there is a single thing you hope journalists and customers understand after driving the Revuelto SV, what is it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> What we call the \u201dquantum of driving\u201d. That you reach the point where you and the car almost become one and feel everything it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, a Lamborghini has to give you emotion. The design, the sound and the driving experience itself should come together to create that wow factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Holm<\/strong> There is only one thing missing then. To taste it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandro Farmeschi<\/strong> Yes, exactly! You can even smell it. The taste is the only thing missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reunion with Stephan Winkelmann<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This wasn't the first time I'd met Stephan Winkelmann either. We had met, amongst other places, at the motor show in Geneva 2017<\/a>, as he was head of Audi Sport and the new Audi<\/a> The RS 5 Coup\u00e9 had just been presented. I photographed him back then in front of the car. It is an encounter that feels extra nice to look back on today, given that he has since returned to Lamborghini as the brand's CEO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Stephan<\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

During Monterey Car Week, there were then two further meetings with Stephan. I bumped into him already at The Quail, where we took a quick selfie together. The day after, we met again at Lamborghini House and I took the opportunity to take a new one, this time in front of the Revuelto SV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second selfie turned out significantly better and also feels like a more fitting memory from this year's Monterey. Stephan back in a Lamborghini environment with the brand's latest SV model right behind us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also had a nice chat with Tim Bravo<\/a>, who is now Media Director at Lamborghini. For me, meetings precisely like these are a huge part of why Monterey Car Week is so special. The cars are naturally the centre of attention, but the opportunity to meet and talk to the people behind them in relatively relaxed circumstances is at least as valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying at the Lamborghini House was simply a absolute delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Lamborghini had another historic highlight planned for the weekend. On Sunday, 43 Lamborghini Miuras gathered at Pebble Beach Golf Links to celebrate the model's 60th anniversary. According to Lamborghini, it was the largest gathering of Miuras ever brought together in one place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Somewhere during the visit my thoughts also turned from the Lamborghini Revuelto SV to another V12 model that holds a very special place in my own history with the marque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1990 I was with my father, Bengt Ason Holm, when he was photographing at the Lamborghini factory for his second car book series, Famous Car Factories<\/em>, one part of which was actually about Lamborghini. It was during that visit that I saw the final silver Lamborghini Countach being built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In October I am heading back to Italy and I am keeping my fingers firmly crossed that a very special reunion will be possible. Now, 36 years later, I hope to get the opportunity to meet that very car again. This time from the driver's seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had closed a circle in a way that is hard to surpass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
