With a price almost completely in line with Volkswagen, Skoda still surprises with its well-equipped models, where the Superb Scout is one of the latest additions.
Skoda goes from clarity to even more clarity. The Czech brand that was bought up by Volkswagen in 1992 has really made a status journey. From the beginning a cheap brand that didn’t make people think of premium models but rather cheap cars from Eastern Europe. Now the price of a Skoda is roughly the same as a Volkswagen and you get a car with high comfort and a sense of quality.
Among the latest models is the Superb and it is now available in the so-called Scout version. Scout is Skoda’s designation, which corresponds to Allroad at Audi and Cross Country at Volvo. Slightly higher with better ground clearance and widened with a plastic screen extender. The whole look is also styled to look a bit more rugged than the regular version of the model. But to get your Superb in this tougher suit, you have to spend just under SEK 100,000.
One of Skoda’s keywords is ”Clever”, which has been used extensively over the years
The Superb has distinguished itself above all with a gigantic rear seat when the second generation appeared in 2008. When the third generation appeared and to which the Superb Scout belongs, the enormous legroom decreased slightly but is still larger than most of the competitors. The previous generation Superb also came with a scout suit, although it was then called Alldrive.
One of Skoda’s keywords is ”Clever”, which has been used extensively over the years. It is mainly about smart solutions found on their car models. Among these, above all, the umbrella on the inside of the door belongs to one of them. Another is the ice scraper that sits in the tank cap. On the Superb Scout, one of these smart things are bags that hang on the back of the front seats where you can store things. Another thing is the separable headrests in the back seat. Practical to avoid getting neck strain when you fall asleep on longer trips.
The engine in the Superb Scout we test drove is a 2-litre diesel machine with a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. There is also a petrol version with 272 horses. The power of 190 horses finds its way down to all four wheels thanks to four-wheel drive related to the Swedish Haldex.
In terms of driving, the Superb Scout feels really good. The fully digital driver environment with only a few physical buttons creates a premium feel and makes you feel comfortable. Whether the price of almost SEK 100,000 more than a regular Superb is okay or too much can be discussed. For only SEK 15,000 extra, you also get a Volkswagen Passat Alltrack. Had it been a little more than five years ago, I would not have chosen a Skoda with such a small price difference, but today I feel more uncertain. Skoda has really raised its brand and with the Superb Scout it raises it a couple of steps further.
